What Business Would You Like to See Open in Newton in 2013?
Newton saw a number of new businesses open and close in 2012 -- what will the Newton business landscape look like in 2013?
With several major retail districts and multiple shopping malls, the business landscape in Newton is always changing.
Over the last year, Newton welcomed more than a dozen restaurant openings or renovations. New retail establishments also opened up shop across the city, including the Heartbreak Hill Running Company, Brussels Sprouts, Pooch Hotel and many more.
But 2012 also brought a number of business closings, including the South Pacific Chinese restaurant, John Dewar & Co., a large part of the Atrium Mall and, the most recent closure, Lam's in Newtonville.
Next year is sure to bring a slew of new retail to the Garden City, with The Street (formerly Chestnut Hill Shopping Center) planning to open new shops and restaurants in early 2013 and Chestnut Hill Square opening with more retail and dining options in fall 2013.

Homemade pasta shop that sells all kinds of homemade pasta, sauces, cheeses, etc. There is a shop in Needham called Tuto Italiano that sells great foods but not pasta. It would be wonderful to have a Tuto Italiano who also sells homemade pasta!

Another bank, pizza parlor, Chinese restaurant, and dry cleaner. Newton is under-served by these types of establishments. If you believe this, I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I'd like to sell you!

I am so sad South Pacific closed. I have been eating there since the 1950's. They had the best chinese anywhere in the country. I sure hope they re-open.

I am thinking of opening a Newtonville shop of used books, coffee and magazines, art, artifacts, and furnishings. I envision a daily reading of rare stories each afternoon and evening, for children of all ages. Also occasional special shows, lectures, and presented videos, focusing on social history and human progress. Music will always be a part of the mix. All presentations to be free. It will be a bit like a storefront library or museum, but all items displayed will be for sale. Any feedback?

I would love to see a vegetarian restaurant, and a cozy cafe/bookstore/diner/bistro, something similar to Trident on Newbury street. What I would NOT like to see are more jewelry stores, and high end clothing stores in Newton Centre. We need more energy and life.
