Where Are Newton's Most Ignored Stop Signs?
Stop signs are not optional, but they're sometimes treated as if they are.
There are hundreds of stop signs in Newton, but all too often, some are overlooked when drivers are in a rush.
We have all seen it -- and many would probably admit to a stop sign roll-through at one point in time.
Do you know of a location in Newton where a stop sign is frequently rolled through or ignored?
Share where it is in the comments section, below.
As you add them in the comments, we'll add the locations to our map on the right side the page.

Elliot Street and Oak Street - specifically, people driving down Elliot Street from Route 9 rarely come to a full stop. For some reason, they think they have the right of way, even though it's a 4 way stop. Police need to better enforced the stop signs at this very dangerous intersection.

I agree with this intersection. A child in stroller and a dog on a leash in the crosswalk didn't seem to deter drivers to drive through the intersection without stoping.

Thank you, everyone for the stop sign locations -- keep them coming! I have added all the locations that we have so far to our map above (on the right side of the page.)

It would be interesting to take the signs reported as frequently ignored and compare them against the criteria normally used to determine if a stop sign is warranted: http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part2/part2b.htm#section2B05 Some of these stop signs may have been placed without meeting those guidelines or may predate the guidelines.

there are certain stop signs which are more akin to neighborhood political rally statements than they are to situational solution; such is the case of Hammond at Suffolk. 'A mind is a terrible thing to waste' - try working with the Board of Aldermen!

At Miller Rd and Cloverdale Rd in Newton Highlands. It's a great cut through so there is a lot of traffic here, but it's a family neighborhood with lots of little children. Between the speeding and people running stop signs, it is very dangerous.

THERE SEEMS TO BE A GREAT TOLERENCE IN NEWTON OF MANY TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS AND GENERAL LACK OF ENFORCEMENT OF TRAFFIC LAWS BY THE NEWTON P.D. IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO FIND OUT HOW MANY TICKETS OR WARNINGS ARE ISSUED FOR WHAT OFFENCES.
I FOR ONE FEEL THE ROADS ARE MORE DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF LACK OF ENFORCEMENT OF THE "MINOR" INFRACTIONS SUCH AS NOT USING TURN SIGNALS, NO LANE DICIPLINE (CHECK OUT THE INTERSECTION AT ADAMS AND WASHINGTON STREETS), PEOPLE NOT STOPPING WHILE GOING RIGHT ON RED, AND A GENERAL DISREGARD OF MANY (MOST) TRAFFIC LAWS BY NEWTON DRIVERS, IN FACT MOST DRIVERS IN THE METROBOSTON AREA.
WE ALSO SHOULD BE AWARE OF LOUSEY SIGNAGE AND FREQUENTLY POOR HIGHWAY/ INTERSECTION DESIGN WHICH CONFORMS TO "THE BOOK"
BUT IGNORE REALITY.
P.S. WE SHOULD NOT FORGT PEDESTRIANS WHO BELIEVE THEY HAVE AN ABSOLUTE RIGHT TO CROO JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE IN AN INTERSECTION.

Maybe some portion of the huge amount of energy the Newton police devote to ticketing parked cars because of meter violations could be redirected toward enforcing traffic laws that have more dire consequences.
