Whiz Kid: Newton South Senior Wins National Speech and Acting Award

Schulman took home top honors for her reading of prose and poetry.

 

Name: Madeline Schulman

Age: 18

School: Newton South High School

Accomplishment: Madeline recently honored her school by becoming the National Champion in Oral Interpretation of Literature (Prose & Poetry Reading) at a national competition for speech and debate.

Madeline's coach, Lisa Honeyman, told Patch the senior star read a poetry program that she put together with several poems on the topic of "beauty," and she read a short story called "After the Wink" by Carolyn Steele Agosta. Event partcipants in the national competition have to read  both poetry and prose selections.

The competition is put on by the National Catholic forensic League (NCFL), and national finals were held in Washington, D.C. over Memorial Day Weekend. To qualify, Madeline had to compete in local and state tournaments, as well.
Maddy has been very active in the NSHS theater program. Most recently she played the role of Hamlet. Shas been acting outside of school productions as well as within the school program throughout her four years at NSHS. Madeline will be attending Carnegie Melon University to study performance in the fall. 

Keys to Awesomeness: Honeyman, the head coach of the Newton South Speech and Debate Team, told Patch about Madeline and provided all of the information about her accomplishment. Honeyman said Madeline's hard work, creative instinct, and acting talent are the keys to her success!
