BLOG: Joe Kennedy’s Growing Record of Incompetence

Joe Kennedy rarely takes chances by making unscripted comments in public. Apparently, he’s not comfortable enough with issues, and he’s afraid he’ll say something wrong if he speaks off the cuff. Unfortunately for him, in the few instances in which he has offered impromptu remarks, he has revealed surprising ignorance of world events for someone seeking federal office. While every candidate makes mistakes, Joe has accumulated quite the record of gaffes in his amazingly short career.

The worst example of Joe’s campaign blunders came when he claimed that Osama Bin Laden was killed during a drone attack. While answering a question at the debate held at Wellesley College about his views on the drone strikes in Yemen and Somalia, Joe stated:

"I am a supporter of the President’s drone initiatives. I am a supporter of certainly the strike that the President launched to, that ended up in the killing of Osama bin Laden."

Joe wants to serve in the U.S. Congress, yet has no idea of how the most wanted man in the world died? How is it possible for a candidate to not be familiar with the actions of the now-famous SEAL Team 6?

Sadly, this is only one example of Joe’s foreign his policy blunders.

1)  During a Democratic primary candidate debate on NECN’s Broadside with Jim Braude, Joe Kennedy incorrectly identified the capital of Israel as Tel Aviv. When questioned again by Braude, Joe doubled down on his answer.

2)  While participating in a live chat on Patch.com, Joe was asked to describe specific programs that he would cut to balance the federal budget. He wrote:

"…Trimming the defense budget. We are winding two wars, which will yield a peace dividend. We also have to be more disciplined in how we spend, so I'd cut projects that even the DOD says they don't want, like the Osprey fighter and the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle."

There are only two problems with that plan: a) the “Osprey fighter” does not exist and has never existed, and b) the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) had been cut almost two years before.

3)   Joe again called publicly for the “Osprey fighter” to be eliminated during a joint editorial board meeting at the Fall River Herald News. Clearly his first mention of the non-existent “fighter” was intended.

While an “Osprey fighter” is not in existence, I believe that my opponent was referencing the V-22 Osprey.  While it was at times a controversial program in the late-90s and early 2000s, the Marines and the Air Force have successfully used it for several years to conduct operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, a V-22 Osprey was used to carry the body of Osama Bin Laden to the aircraft carrier where he was buried at sea.

Joe’s answers clearly demonstrate why he is not only unqualified to serve in Congress. His lack of knowledge coupled with a lack of willingness to learn the issues, form a dangerous combination for someone who would vote on national security issues.

As one of my volunteers, a Marine who wrapped up his active duty in the past month, recently said, “The military has so much invested in the Osprey that it couldn’t function if the program was cut. No one wants it cut.”

Kennedy’s suggestion to cut the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle was not exactly a bold stance either. According to a New York Times article from January 2011, the program was cut nearly two years ago.

Given that Joe Kennedy seldom takes positions on issues and, that when he does, he almost never gives specifics, it’s particularly odd that he should try to demonstrate expertise in a field that is so clearly a strength of mine and a weakness of his.

Joe Kennedy is inexperienced and unqualified. His answer on the location of the capital of Israel demonstrated his ignorance of foreign policy. The suggestion that we cut either made up programs or programs that were already eliminated only underscores how dangerous he would be if he was let loose in the halls of the Capitol Building.

America has real problems. The Fourth Congressional District needs a real leader – someone with military and national security experience and a background in the private sector.

With a growing track record of incompetence with foreign policy and now Defense spending, Joe Kennedy is clearly not qualified or ready to serve in Washington.

The people of the Fourth District should send someone with knowledge and experience in national security. They should send in a Marine.

This race is going to come down to the Democrat vote vs the Republican vote. It does not matter that Sean Bielat thinks he's more qualified because he was a grunt. I was in the USN for 6yrs, does that make me more qualified than Joe Kennedy? Massachusetts is a blue state, Kennedy wins this race by a landslide!

If you fine yourself in trouble, and you will, (running in to jersey barriers outside the Capital Bldg or being stopped by airport security or having a drug problem) just offer up the good ole Kennedy line "Don't you know who I am". Also, don't forget I was called joke long before you!... Oh how our Founding Fathers must be throwing up in their graves!

I support and will vote for Sean Bielat with accomplished business experience, who has served in the military, knows what it's like to go for a real job interview and earn himself a job, has to earn a paycheck to keep food on the table to support his family and pay all the bills, vs the trust-funded candidate who has done none of the above.

The person to best represent me is the one who (for the most part) shares my ideas, and understands what the majority of people who have footed and are footing the bills in the country are going through. This is obtained through life experiences.
Joe, may be a decent person, but we agree less on the course for the future of the country. Joe does not have that life experience, and does not fit the description of someone who would represent me.

My vote is for Sean Bielat, but if by some stroke of misfortune the Kennedy name prevails we can take comfort in knowing he will be a junior representative in a Republican dominated House. In the meantime, he can be coached by the other Massachusetts Dems in the minority.

I doubt that Kennedy will do any harm... he's a likeable chap. But a vote for Bielat makes more sense.

I don't vote based on likeability. Joe's commercials are too syrupy for me.

He is portrayed as the grandson every elder dreams of. He will come over and mow your lawn, rake your leaves, paint your barn A cup of hot cocoa and a slice of apple pie is all he wants in return. Yet he was a prosecutor? I don't get it. Phoney?

Gretchen,
What kind of private sector experience does Joe Kennedy III have??? None, his only experience is two years of public sector work in the district attorney's office and working in the peace corp. None of the work experiences include creating good paying real jobs in the private sector, so he knows nothing about how the private sector works. Mr. Kennedy is also running on his family name, and the trouble is, people like you will blindly vote for him, just because his last name is Kennedy. A more experienced person is needed in Washington who understands private sector job creation and the methods to achieve them, that man is Sean Bielat.

Kennedy has the advantage of running against a candidate who wants to eliminate the Affordable Healthcare Act, interfere with women's right to make decisions about their own bodies. He's a Republican at a time when the party is SO extreme that no one can stand them. Bielat can say whatever he wants, can say he's pro-choice but with Republicans nationally making headlines about their extremist position on rape and abortion, women get scared about the whole ticket. We know George Ross is anti-abortion and anti-gay. (And so is Scott Brown though he makes out that he's pro-choice.... and Brown is definitely against gay marriage). Bielat gets tarred with all these brushes. He may be sincere, but at this point the national Republican ticket has so alienated the public, that many, many voters don't to trust Brown, Bielat, Ross.

Not all Kennedys are born to politics. Teddy's son Patrick was almost destroyed by life on the beltway. As soon as his father died, Patrick quit the HR, got his act together and appears to be happy with his new family.

Young Joe Kennedy appears too nice, too naive for the fray. Politics is a tough sport. And his father is not a powerful senator.

Gretchen,
Once again, you're spreading lies about Senator Brown. he's not grandstanding on any issue, he devotes his time at his job as a U.S.Senator and he's one of the most bipartisan U.S Senators in Washington. He reads the bills, asks the right questions, and does the research before voting on legislation. Senator Brown is a problem solver, that's what he is, and for Scott Brown, it doesn't matter what political party a person is from, it matters that parties be put aside in order to find solutions that will bring a healthy economy with good paying jobs back to Americans.

Anonymous,

Lots of people listen to and heed the Boston Globe endorsement. Brown ran a sleazy campaign especially when he attacked Elizabeth Warren for her statements on being part native American. That was just scurrilous and indicates his race to the bottom campaigning.

Martha Coakley would have made a great Senator but she continues to do excellent work as Attorney General of Massachusetts.

I think your two comments bookends. You say "people have their own brains" and in your next breath, "people here will vote for a dog as long as it wears a "d" on its collar." Seems like a major inconsistency in your statements....

People vote Democratic because at least we're sane, we're reality-based. Republicans have run an extremist view on so many issues. There are 15 Repub. candidates for the Senate who want to outlaw birth control and abortion, including forcing a girl or woman impregnated by rape to continue the pregnancy. Remember the "legitimate rape" comment?

If you want to talk about leadership, maybe we'll do that. I think Obama is a real leader and Romney is not. He catered to the billionaires all along the way in the campaign.
