Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011.  In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. A Globe Top Performer is Coming to Newtonville

One of the top-performing publicly traded companies in the region, according to the Boston Globe's annual rankings, is coming to Newton.

Belmont Savings Bank was named the Boston Globe’s annual rankings of the 100 top-performing publicly traded companies headquartered in Massachusetts in the Sunday Boston Globe, and online.  The bank plans to open its first Newton branch inside the Newtownville Shaw's on Aug. 6. This is the first time the bank has been on the Globe 100 -- it came in at number 65. The 25th annual Globe 100 ranking was developed based on how well companies increased sales, profits, and returns for shareholders in 2012. “This is a tremendous accomplishment for Belmont Savings Bank that would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of all our employees.  Our strategy of combining the same technology and services of the big banks with the …

What's Going on With Wegmans?

The opening of the Chestnut Hill location will be delayed.

It appears Newton will have to wait a bit longer to scratch the Wegmans shopping itch. A spokeswoman for the grocery chain said that the opening of its Chestnut Hill store has been delayed until spring 2014, though the original timeline anticipated an opening in fall 2013. "Some construction delays and demands of other projects that we're building forced us to move it back just a little," said Jo Natale, director of media relations for Wegmans. She said a typical pace of opening is two to three stores per year. Natale said that work on the Chestnut Hill location is going well and that the developer has delivered the store's shell to Wegmans. The grocery chain designs and constructs its stores individually, Natale explained, adding that …
