Newton Chefs Show Culinary Strength at Boston Bites Back

On May 15, 100 area chefs gathered at Fenway Park for Boston Bites Back, an event to raise funds for One Fund Boston and to raise spirits among the attendees (including first responders and victims of the marathon bombings)

On an unexpectedly beautiful night at Fenway Park, 100 of the Boston area’s best-known and most loved chefs and restaurateurs gathered at Boston Bites Back to raise money for One Fund Boston, the charity set up to provide aid to victims (and their families) of the Boston Marathon bombings.  Of course, a few of Newton’s own “celebrichefs” made the scene. Representing New England Soup Factory, Paul Brophy and Marjorie Druker provided a beautiful Minestrone Verde comprised of a plethora of vegetables, ditalini pasta, fresh basil and Parmesan cheese in a vegetarian stock. The soul-warming cup of deliciousness was topped with a crostini and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Chef Michael Leviton of Lumiere (and Area Four) was there with …

Wally's Wicked Good 5K Brings Out a Crowd Despite Rainy Skies

Nealy 200 runners hit Newton's rainy streets Thursday, May 9, for the annual Wally's Wicked Good 5K to benefit the Melanoma Foundation of New England.

Runners braved rain and puddles and mud for the third annual Wicked Good 5K and Fun Run on Thursday, May 9 at Auburndale Cove. In spite of the less than perfect weather, race coordinator Anita Alden said this year's event was a success. "We are blessed with a loyal following of local runners -- some of whom have run all three years," Alden told Patch. "Our kids fun run grows each year, and this year the young runners were not at all deterred by the steady rain or muddy course!" Proceeds from the race, which is put on by Wally's Wicked Good Ice Cream and Treats, benefitted the Melanoma Foundation of New England. Alden said she was surprised this year by the number of teams running in support of a loved one with melanoma. "As a 13-year …

Newton in the Kitchen

A Fond Foodie Farewell

After two-and-a-half years as Newton Patch's food writer and freelancer, Wendy Schapiro is moving to warmer climates and back into the classroom

Last week, local editor Melanie Graham announced that she would be leaving Newton Patch for an exciting new opportunity at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. While I was excited to hear that the fabulous Brooklyn Lowery would be stepping into the local editor’s virtual shoes, I can’t imagine working without Melanie -– and, as I can now share, I won’t have to. This will be my last column as the Newton Patch food writer and author of the “Newton in the Kitchen” column. Not to steal her thunder, but my move was actually planned long before Mel’s.  In fact, when I first started thinking about moving to the Los Angeles area, which I will be doing at the end of the month, Melanie was in middle school! I came east for college, and though I have …

Newton Foreclosure Activity Down Dramatically from March 2012

Foreclosure activity decreased significantly across the state, signalling the end of the foreclosure crisis, according to Banker & Tradesman.

Newton's home and condo sales through March 2013 have been down slightly from the same period in 2012, but the good news is that foreclosure numbers through the same month in 2013 have dropped dramatically. New numbers released by the Warren Group show an 82 percent decrease across the state in petitions to foreclose as compared to the numbers for March 2012. Newton mirrors that dramatic decrease with a reduction of 75 percent from March 2012 to March 2013. Warren Group CEO Timothy M. Warren Jr. credits foreclosure prevention efforts and a "booming" real estate market for the decrease. The numbers are significant enough to lead Banker & Tradesman to declare "The foreclosure crisis as we know it is over." Foreclosure petitions indicate the …
