Catherine M. (Prezioso) Prestejohn, 91, founder of Cabot's Ice Cream, passed away on April 26, 2013. Prestejohn and her husband, the late Joseph E. Prestejohn, operated a number of restaurants in the Boston area. The two ran the Center Delicatessen in Arlington and the Boulevard Restaurant in Allston before opening Cabot's Ice Cream in Newtonville in 1969, according to her obituary. Prestejohn worked at the Newtonville restaurant daily with her daughter, Sue, and son, Joe, until shortly before her death, her obituary read. Axel Kaufmann, 88, of Newton, passed away on April 22, 2013. Kaufmann was born in Frankfurt/Main, Germany and spent his childhood in Berlin before coming to the U.S. in 1938, according to his obituary. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific. A graduate of MIT, Kaufmann was an architect his entire professional life, his obituary read. Salvatore Arico, 90, of Newton, died on April 13, 2013. A Lincoln Road resident, Arico was a 32-year veteran of the Newton Police Department. He's also a former commander of the American Legion Post 440 and past grand knight of the Grand Knights of Columbus, his obituary read. Arico was a 1975 graduate of Boston College. Andy Ross Dilley Marshall, 82, of New London, N.H., passed away on March 2 at her home. Marshall was born in the Lake District of England, but lived much of her life in Newton, according to her obituary. She earned degrees from Huyton Girls College, England and attended the University of California at Berkelee. Marshall was a top twenty player on the U.S. Tennis Circuit and was Wimbledon Tournament and Forest Hills player. John A. Stranahan, 83, of Marlborough, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2013. Before moving to Marlborough, Stranahan lived in Newton Upper Falls for more than 45 years, according to his obituary. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Upper Falls for more than 50 years. Stranahan was born and raised in Brookline and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Emily T. Woo, 92, of Newton, passed away peacefully at her home on March 23, 2013, surrounded by her family. Woo was born in Naking, China in 1920 and was the oldest of six. She was sent by her parents to America as the Japanese occupation threatened their safety in China, according to her obituary. She attended Park College in Missouri and eventually Wellesley College, where she earned a degree in physical hygiene. Edward G. York, 85, a longtime Newton resident and Newton firefighter, passed away on Feb. 22. York was born in Newton and worked as a Newton firefighter. He also served in the U.S. Army, according to his obituary. York was married to the late Eleanor York and was a father of seven children. He also had 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Carleton P. Merrill, 88, a lifelong Newton resident, passed away on Jan. 23, 2012. Born and raised in Newton, Merrill graduated from Newton High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, according to his obituary posted on the Eaton Funeral Homes website. John A. Bavicchi, 90, of Newton, died on Dec. 9, 2012 after facing deteriorating health in recent months. Bavicchi initially graduated from MIT with a degree in civil engineering. According to his obituary, he went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. When Bavicchi returned from the war, he enrolled at the New England Conservatory of Music and continued to study composition at Harvard University. Dr. Edwin Carton, 85, of Newton, passed away on Saturday. According to his obituary, he spent his final days listening to arias performed by his granddaughter, Nili Riemer Buckert.
