The Second Church in Newton celebrates the liturgical season of Lent with a special performance of a masterpiece by 17th century composer Heinrich Schutz, Sunday, March 3 at 10 am.

The Church's Minister of Music, Andrus Madsen, will conduct the Chancel Choir, vocal soloists, and brass instrumentalists from Newton Baroque in "Musikalische Exequien".

Written for the funeral of a German prince, the work was a favorite of Johannes Brahms, who used it as a model for his own great "German Requiem".  Soloists are Julia Steinbok and Shannon Canavin, sopranos;  Shiba Nemat-Nasser, mezzo-soprano; Martin Near, countertenor;  Thomas Oesterling and David McSweeney, tenors; Matthew Stansfield and Brett Johnson, baritones.

The performance will be the highlight of morning worship on March 3, and will take place in the sanctuary at 60 Highland St., West Newton.  A free will offering will be taken.

For further information call the church at 617-527-2490 or visit www.2ndChurch.org.
