Farmers' Market, Debut Novel, 'America's Obsessives'

A few things you need to know on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013 in Newton.

1. It's Massachusetts Farmers' Market Week and Tuesday is farmers' market day at Cold Spring Park. Stop by from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and check out what the local farmers and vendors have for you this week.

2. The Newton Free Library will welcome Josh Kendall, author of "America's Obsessives" as he discusses some American icons who gave into their obsessions and achieved success. A book signing will follow with copies of the book available for sale.

3. It's Boston Restaurant Week. There are a few Newton restaurants taking part, but we also know of one Newton restaurant offering an unofficial Restaurant Week option: Farmstead Table, which is offering an all vegetarian three-course dinner for $38.13, according to Boston.Eater.com.

4. ICYMI. A Newton writer pulled no punches with her first novel, deciding instead to tackle a taboo topic with a personal element.
