5 Things: Annual Festival, Free Concert, Home Tour, Pet Safety

Here's what's going on in Newton on July 18, 2013.

1. St. Mary of Carmen's 78th Annual Festival kicked off July 17 and continues through July 21. Check out the details of this festival/carnival and head over to Hawthorne Street to take part.

2. Head to Ware's Cove in Auburndale Thursday at noon for a free performance for kids featuring David Polansky.

3. Stop by Mary Baker Eddy's final home Thursday evening for a free tour of the house and gardens (weather permitting). The founder of Christian Science lived in the Chestnut Hill home from 1908-1910. Tours begin every 30 minutes from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

4. The hot, hot temps and high humidity are expected to stick around for a few more days. Stay safe, enjoy the air-conditioned spots around the city (the Newton Free Library has been PACKED lately), and make a stop at your favorite Newton ice cream shop.

5. From one dog lover to all Newton Patch readers, please, please look after your pets during this heat wave. In particular, don't leave them in your car ... no matter how quick a trip you plan to make.
