5 Things You Need to Know: July 3

Reminders for July 4, meeting tonight, library hours and more.

1. Prepare for July 4. City, state and national offices are closed on Thursday for the July 4 holiday. If you have business at the library, city hall, post office, etc., better handle it today.

2. Time for your weekly walk in Hammond Woods. Tonight's walk will take participants through the west part of the woods with highlights that include Thompsonville Brook, Moss Rock swamp, a glacial erratic the size of a Smart car, Gooch’s Caves, and Bare Pond (vernal). Meet at 85 Madoc St. at 6:30 p.m.

3. The Public Safety and Transportation Committee is scheduled to meet at 7:40 p.m. in room 202 at Newton City Hall.

4. Remember that the Newton Free Library is now operating on summer hours. Throughout July and August, the library is closed on Sundays.

5. The City of Newton throws its own Fourth of July celebration complete with pet parade, live entertainment, a craft fair and, of course, fireworks. Here are the details.
