Five Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 11

An author event, a book fair and a holiday peformance.

1. Funding approved. The Newton School Committee gave its approval last night for the School Department to spend $350,000 on the feasibility study and design for seven modular classrooms at four elementary schools. The elementary schools that will receive the classrooms include Mason-Rice, Bowen, Burr and Horace Mann. Stay tuned to Patch for details on the meeting and the vote.

2. Scholastic Book Fair. The Suzuki Preschool of Newton will host a Scholastic Book Fair today from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Newton Cultural Center. There will be a variety of books on sale from preschool to adult books. All proceeds benefit the Suzuki Preschool.

3. Author event. The Newton Free Library will host author Tim Riley tonight at 7 p.m. Riley will speak about his book Lennon: The Man, the Myth, the Music. The event is free and open to the public and books will be on hand for purchase courtesy of the New England Mobile Book Fair.

4. Silver Newtones holiday performance. The Silver Newtones senior chorus will give a free performance of Hanukkah and Christmas songs TOMORROW, Dec. 12 at the Mall at Chestnut Hill. The concert starts at 7 p.m. Note: This was incorrectly listed as an event today. Sorry for any inconvenience.

5. Land Use Committee. The Board of Aldermen's Land Use Committee will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in room 222 at City Hall. The committee will hold a public hearing on a proposed residential project for Adams Street and hold a working session on proposed expansions/renovations at the Mall at Chestnut Hill and the Four Corners Whole Foods. For more details and information on Tuesday's meeting, check out the agenda in the .pdf section to the right.
