Five Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 30

A free concert, open houses and info on New Year's Eve celebrations.

1. Free concert. The Nate Aronow Nextet will give a free concert this afternoon at the Newton Free Library. The performance will include original, contemporary jazz pieces as well as obscure classics. The show starts at 2 p.m.

2. Wrapping up the snowstorm. The snow is expected to taper off this morning and give way to partly sunny skies this afternoon. The city issued a snow emergency last night, which means all cars must be parked off the street until the ban is lifted. Also, residents should keep in mind the city's trial of the snow shoveling ordinance, which asks that homeowners clear the sidewalks outside their homes within 30 hours of a storm. If you have any service requests for the city after the snowstorm, file them via the 311 system. All power outages should be reported directly to NSTAR. 911 is for emergencies only.
