Informational Meeting on Coyotes, Wild Turkeys in Newton

While one can categorize much of Newton as an urban environment, local residents still have their fair share of wildlife encounters.

With past reports of coyotes attacking dogs and "crazed" turkeys taking over Newton Centre, some residents have expressed concern to city officials about Newton's more - wild - neighbors. 

As a way to answer questions and provide more information to residents, the city will host a presentation and discussion about the wildlife population in Newton. The event will take place this Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the War Memorial Auditorium at Newton City Hall. 

According to information on the city's website, experts from the Massachusetts Department of Wildlife will be on hand at the event to specifically discuss the coyote and wild turkey populations in Newton.

"Each of these species are very visible throughout the city, and many residents have expressed concern over living in such close proximity to them," the city event listing says.

Residents will have an opportunity to learn and ask any questions about the wildlife in the city. 

A similar meeting was held in October 2011 after an incident where where a West Newton dog was killed by a coyote.
