Downton Abbey Themed Event Helps Local Food Banks

Several Newton businesses sponsored the event at the Elm Bank Reservation in Wellesley.

Get a touch of the Downton Abbey life at an event that will help local food banks through the Garden to Table program.

Event organizers wanted to do a themed event, and some of them were big fans of the PBS program about life at an English manor, said Leslie Mann, a volunteer with Garden to Table and a an agent with Gibson Sotheby’s Realty.

“There will be fun things from the show,” Mann said. “There is a cricket match in the show so we have a cricket team come out to play. There will be vintage cars, and an auction house is coming down from Vermont, and will be displaying clothes from the time period.”

During the event on Sunday, Sept. 15, visitors can drive tour the 36 acres at Elm Bank, and play croquet in the center green, have tea, and listen to music from the era provided by a couple of Berklee College students, Mann said.

In the evening, people can walk into carriage house, have Pimm’s, a traditional British drink, and look at vintage clothes from 1912 to early the 1920s.

Garden to Table raises vegetables on the Elm Bank grounds and teaches people that they can create a garden small space, and cook and prepare food.

“The produce from the garden is donated to local food pantries,” Mann said. "It gives families in need a way to provide healthy, fresh vegetables to their families."

Last year, 4,000 pounds of vegetables were donated to the Natick and Wellesley food pantries, Mann said.

Sponsors and supporters include Newton-based Equinox, Gregorian Rugs, and Hotel Indigo.
