PHOTOS: Construction Starts at the Newton Sept. 11 Memorial

The memorial includes elements that represent the Twin Towers, Pentagon and the path of Flight 93. It will also include a piece of World Trade Center steel.

crews have started construction of the local memorial that honors the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. 

The Newton Sept. 11 Memorial is located in front of Newton Fire Headquarters on Centre Street in Newton Centre.

Along with "perennial grasses, spring bulbs and flowers," the memorial will include several elements representing the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the flight path of United Airlines Flight 93. A piece of steel from the World Trade Center will also be incorporated into the design.

Last month's groundbreaking include a reading of the names and ages of the eight people with Newton ties who were killed in the attacks, a Sept. 11 tradition the committee hopes to continue at the memorial.
