Ready for Winter? Newton Snow Shoveling Applications Available

Although many people may not want to think about large mounds of snow piling up on the side of the street, winter is on its way and Newton is starting to prepare. 

Following , the Parks & Recreation Department is looking for people interested in working and volunteering in a city snow shoveling program. 

Those who are interested can sign up for a volunteer program or a list that includes those interested in shoveling for payment. 

Under the trial ordinance, residents abutting sidewalks will be required to clear the walkways and handicap ramps within 30 hours after a storm.

The shoveling jobs are geared toward students looking for extra cash or volunteer hours, although adults are welcome to participate. Once someone signs up for the shoveling list, his/her name, phone number and village will be made available to residents needing assistance with shoveling. 

A few key notes highlighted by the Parks & Recreation Department include:

• Those under the age of 18 who are interested in participating must check with parents before signing up to be on the list. 

• When a (paid) shoveler receives a phone call about a possible job, the shoveler is responsible for negotiating a price and any parameters.

• The paid positions are a private negotiation with no City involvement.
