Does Community Theater Have a Future in Newton?

There's been a lot of change in Newton's community theater offerings lately. What do you think that means for its future in the Garden City?

The past eight months haven't been kind to community theater in the Garden City.

Turtle Lane Playhouse closed the curtain on its 32-year history in early 2013, liquidating its stock of costumes and canceling its final scheduled production. Then, just a month ago, Newton Country Players announced it was also shuttering operations... this time after 57 years of putting on shows.

And, if you go back a few years, the New Repertory Theater packed up shop and headed to Watertown after a lengthy history in Newton Highlands.

All this moving on or closing up of local theater in the city does beg the question: Does community theater have a future in Newton?

If someone were to start a new community theater group in the city, would you buy tickets to the shows? Is there a particular type of show you'd pay to see? In what setting would you like to see it (indoor, outdoor, etc.)

If you love community theater and want to see it happening in Newton, speak up in the comments below. If you love community theater, but don't think it has a place in Newton, that's something we want to know, too.
