Newton Grad Goes to the Oscars

A Newton South High School graduate headed to Los Angeles this spring for the internship of a lifetime.

A Newton resident had her chance to walk the red carpet at the 2013 Academy Awards thanks to an internship she landed with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Jennifer Segal, a 2010 graduate of Newton South High School, is currently a junior studying communication management and design at Ithaca College in New York. Through the college's ICLA, a program that allows students to spend a semester living and interning in Los Angeles, Segal landed the internship with the AMPAS -- it's only the second time the Hollywood organization has taken on an intern in its history, according to a press release.

Segal walked the red carpet at the Oscars and attended the Governor's Ball as part of her internship, but she also handled some heavy responsibilities.

"On just my second full day of interning, I was the sole person in charge of distributing the nomination results to the press after they were announced by Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone," she said in the press release. "During the actual show, my main job was in the press room, helping with the transcription and distribution to media outlets of acceptance speeches and backstage interviews."

Segal has an interest in entertainment public relations and that interest was piqued even more through her time with the AMPAS.

"I had such an exceptional experience at the Oscars, I might be going down a path of film publicity, but regardless of what profession I choose, I know the experiences I have had at IC and my internships will be integral in the path I go down," she said in the release.

This summer, Segal is continuing her run of exceptional internships with a stint at MTV Networks and Paramount Pictures.
