Spring Open Studios to Feature 180 Newton Artists at 'Pop-Up' Exhibits

The Spring Open Studios will take place this weekend, April 6-7, 2013.

It's that time of year again when homes and businesses across the city will transform into galleries filled with the artwork of local, Newton artists.

Newton Open Studios' annual Spring Open Studios will take place this weekend, April 6-7, at nearly 60 locations across the city. These "pop-up" exhibits will feature paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, collages and jewelry from 180 Newton artists.

But if you're hungry for local art and cannot wait until this weekend -- the NOS celebration will kick off tonight, April 3, with an opening reception at the Newton Free Library from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

This weekend's event marks the 16th spring Open Studios event for NOS and the first time the spring show has been held in April, as opposed to its usual time in early May.

Throughout this weekend, artwork will be on display in various spots around Newton including local businesses, city buildings and many of the artists' homes or studios. Some of this year's larger exhibits will be held at the New Art Center, the Piccadilly Building in Newton Centre, L'Aroma Cafe, Trefler & Sons and the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center.

All exhibits are free and open to the public from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., with some locations offering special previews and extended hours.

Helping local art fans along the way are the Spring Open Studios printable guidebook and website, which list all the artists and locations for this weekend's showcase. The Newton Open Studios website also features an interactive map as well as ways to search for artists by name, media or village.

In addition to the annual Spring Open Studios, NOS also holds an annual fall art show as well as several smaller art shows around the city.
