Start Your Holiday Shopping at the Newton Fine Art and Crafts Show

Find unique holiday gifts at the Newton Fine Art and Crafts Show this weekend.

The will return to the this weekend, right in time for holiday shopping.

Taking place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the popular juried art show will feature the work of about 45 artists for sale at affordable prices, says Linda Plaut, director of the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs.

The Newton Fine Art and Crafts Show is a great place for people to find unique gifts for those on their holiday lists, she says.

“Whey you buy or wear something made by someone rather than a machine, there’s a real connection with that,” says Plaut.  “It’s a way of getting away from mass production and finding something for yourself or your home that you can connect with.”

The show will include an assortment of textiles, glass, jewelry, pottery, paintings, photography, and wooden pieces created by artisans selected from all over New England.

This year, there will even be some furniture and paper artwork, including homemade stationary and calendars, she says.

Since the show is juried, the artists participating are selected from a pool of applicants.

“There’s a decision making group that decides who gets in,” says Plaut.  “It’s not first come, first serve.  This keeps the quality [of the art] really quite high.”

The art is also being sold at reasonable prices so it is affordable to more people, she says.

While the art and craft show supports the artists selling their work, many of the participants are also donating artwork to a raffle that will benefit Newton Community Pride and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. The proceeds of the raffle will support the free events they put on in Newton throughout the year.

Since they ask each of the artists to make a donation to the raffle, Plaut says many people who enter the raffle will have an opportunity to win something.
