Cubs' Offense Cannot Keep Up with West Athletics

This is the latest post in the Newton Central young sports writers program.

During the spring little league season we are posting articles written by young Newton sports writers. This story was written by Jaden Farquhar, grade 5 at Peirce school.

After holding the Cubs scoreless in the top of the 1st Inning, the Athletics kicked off the bottom of the 1st Inning with zeal and poise.  Athletics Jordan Carey pummeled a hard line drive to left field for a single.  Following a ground out, Alex Greblick and Matthew Riak walked.  The bases were loaded, and the race was on!  The Athletics pushed across two runs following a Cubs’ infield error.  Nov Levy then hit a line drive triple, driving in another two runs.  Nov later scored on a wild pitch.  The score was quickly 5-0 Athletics.

In the top of the 2nd Inning, John Shore singled.  Following a strikeout, on the next play, an error led to John shore hustling around the bases and scoring the Cubs first run.

The Athletics continued to increase their lead during the bottom of the 2nd Inning.  Following two errors in the infield, the Athletics were able to push across another run.  Despite another single and a walk, and a few steals, the Cubs were able to hold the Athletics to only one run.

Both teams went 3up 3down in the 3rd Inning, though the 4th Inning was a different story.

Victory for the Athletics

For both teams, the 4th Inning was high and mighty.  In the top of the 4th, Cubs Paul Kadis doubled.  He then advanced to 3rd base following a single by John Shore.  Paul Kadis eventually scored on a ground out by Ben Sachs.  Daniel Belkind next doubled in another run and the Cubs appeared close to a comeback.

In the bottom of the 4th Inning, Dylan Crook started a rally for the Athletics with a single.  The Athletics added two more singles by Jordan Carey and Alex Greblick and were able to score another run.  The Athletics then pushed across 2 more runs with a ground out and took advantage of a wild pitch.  At the end of the Inning, the score was 9-3, Athletics.

Neither team made much noise in the 5th Inning.  In the top of the 6th Inning, John Shore hit a single and stole 2nd base.  The Cubs appeared ready to come back when they loaded the bases with a walk and a single.  Sam Kingsley then walked to score a run, but the Athletics continued to display confidence and shut down the Cubs to end the game.  The final score was 9-4 Athletics.
