Cubs v. Orioles: Stalemate

Cubs v. Orioles - Newton Little League cross town battle

During the spring little league season we are posting articles written by young Newton sports writers. This story was written by Jaden Farquhar, grade 5 at Peirce school.

The Orioles traveled to Cabot to play the Cubs on June 6th.  The starting pitcher for the Orioles was Tyler Horsik.  The Cubs countered on the mount with Alex Ring.  The 1st Inning began when the Orioles’ Franco Maloney singled.   Next, Jack Leblanc reached 1st base off of an error by the Cubs’ Third Baseman.  Then John Moore walked, loading the bases.  After that, Evan Ryles hit an RBI single.  Owen Wacha walked, driving in another run.  Still, no one was out.  The Cubs got two outs on a fly ball and a groundout.  Finally, the shortstop got the final out on a line drive.  In the bottom of the 1st Inning, after two quick outs, Mathew Gluck singled.   He stole second base and then scored on a double by Reese Farquhar.  The score was now 2-1 Orioles.

In the top of the 2nd Inning, the Orioles’ David Scurry reached 1st base off of an error.  Next, Franco Maloney singled.  Then after two outs, John Moore doubled scoring a run.  Evan Ryales singled, scoring another run.  The score was now 4-1 Orioles.  The Orioles kept the Cubs at bay in the bottom of the 2nd Inning.

The Cubs changed pitchers and went to John Shore.  The Orioles lead off the 3rd Inning with a double by Tyler Horsik.  Following a strikeout, Michael Dirussl singled scoring a run.  The next batter walked, but was thrown out by Matthew Gluck trying to steal second base.  The Cubs led off the bottom of the inning with a ground out.  Andrew Hass singled.  After another ground out, Mathew Gluck doubled, scoring a run and making the score 5-2.  Reese Farquhar then hit a triple scoring another run, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score.

The Cubs changed pitchers and went to Lukas Hanenberger.  Neither team scored in the 4th Inning.  In the top of the 5th Inning, Evan Ryales and Owen Wacha of the Orioles kicked off the Inning with two singles.  The Orioles scored on a few passed balls, and Johah Michel being hit by the pitch.  The Cubs next brought in Andrew Hass to pitch and were able to strikeout the final two batters and throw out a runner attempting to steal second base.  The score was now 7-3.

Cubs Come Alive

In the bottom of the 5th Inning, the Cubs rallied.  Following a strikeout, Andrew Hass reached 1st base on an error.  John Shore then singled, and Mathew Gluck singled, scoring a run.  John Shore scored on a passed ball.  Cole Cleary reached 1st base off of an error, and later scored.  Alex Ring continued the Inning by walking.  After that, Sam Kingsley singled to score another run.  The score was now tied 7-7.

In the top of the 6th Inning, the Orioles were able to get a runner on base due to a leadoff error by the Cubs, but Pitcher Andrew Hass was able to get the next three outs including one strikeout.  The Orioles went to Pitcher John Moore in the bottom of the 6th Inning.  John struck out the first batter.  Then, John Shore singled, and the next batter grounded out.  Reese Farquhar singled and stole second base.  The Cubs had runners on second and third base, but the Orioles were able to just nip Cole Cleary on a very close ground out, forcing the game into extra innings.

Both teams went fairly quickly in the 7th Inning, and the game was called in a tie due to darkness.
