Cubs vs. Indians: Cubs’ Comeback

Newton Young Sports Writers Latest Story - Cubs vs. Indians: Cubs' Comeback

During the spring little league season we are posting articles written by young Newton sports writers. This story was written by Jaden Farquhar, grade 5 at Peirce school.

The Cubs faced the Indians in an epic showdown settling a classic Major League rivalry.  The game started in the top of the 1st Inning with a double hit by Cubs’ Mathew Gluck.  Although he was in scoring position, he never scored.  In the bottom of the 1st Inning, the Indians went down quietly.

The 2nd Inning went by quickly, as neither team scored.

In the bottom of the 3rd Inning, following a strikeout, the Indians started a rally with walks to Connor Daley, Alex Leone and Henry Rosov to load the bases.  The Indians then scored their first run following another walk to Jason Kotsnib.  The Indians then erupted with a big triple by Josh Cooke scoring 3 runs.  Conan Devlin added another run with a double making the score 5-0, Indians.  The game had looked hopeless for the Cubs until…

The Comeback

The 4th Inning started off well for the Cubs.  First, Cubs’ Andrew Hass hit a triple.  Next, Cubs’ Ben Kreppein walked and then a ball was hit near 1st base, but Indians’ Josh Cooke caught it using his lightning fast reflexes with an amazing diving catch.  Cubs’ Paul Kadis then hit a ground ball to shortstop to drive in a run.  The Indians failed to score in the bottom of the 4th Inning.

In the top of the 4th Inning Cole Cleary was able to get on base following an error.   He later scored on a single by Mathew Gluck.  In the bottom of the 5th Inning, after a couple of walks and a single, the Indians loaded the bases.  Luckily for the Cubs, their pitcher, Andrew Hass, was able to end the Inning before the Indians scored.

In the top of the 6th Inning, following a strikeout, Reese Farquhar started the rally with a single.  Paul Kadis then reached base on an error, and thereafter Alex Ring hit a triple scoring 2 runs to tie the game.   Finally, Alex Ring scored on a ground out putting the Cubs in the lead in this nail-biting game.  The Cubs held the Indians at bay in the bottom of the 6th Inning.  The final score was 6-5, Cubs.

Thoughts on the Comeback

Many people were impressed with the Cubs’ mighty comeback.  Following the game, the Cubs’ coach Bill Cleary said: “I felt great about it, because the boys never gave up, and they were in the game and cheering their friends on, and they came back because they never quit.”  Ben Sachs’s grandmother said: “Oh I felt wonderful about it, I did, because my grandson plays for the Cubs.  It was very exciting!”  This concludes my article on this exciting game!  Join me next week on the Newton Patch blog.
