Cubs vs. Phillies: Newton Central Rematch

Young sports writer Jaden Farquhar re-caps an old Newton Central rivalry between the Phillies and Cubs.

During the spring little league season we are posting articles written by young Newton sports writers. This story was written by Jaden Farquhar, grade 5 at Peirce school.

The Phillies and the Cubs faced off again in this exciting rematch.  The Phillies began the 1st Inning with a walk by Gabe Peckler.  This was followed by another walk by Jon Hammer, and a single by Elijah Joffe that drove in a run.  Elijah Joffe soon scored off of a fielder’s choice making the score 2-0 Phillies.  The Cubs started off this Inning with a walk by Andrew Hass.  The Cub’s Mathew Gluck drove a deep single into the outfield leading to the first run for the Cubs.

In the 2nd Inning the Phillies Eytan Pomper led off with a walk.  This was followed by a single by Nick Tobin.  Eytan Pomper then advanced to 3rd Base.  While in scoring position, Eytan tried to steal home but was tagged out at the plate.  In the bottom of the 2nd Inning, Ben Kreppein walked.  After that, Cole Cleary singled.  The Inning ended before either of them could score.  The 3rd and 4th Innings led to no runs, but there were some great defensive plays.  By the end of the 4th Inning the Phillies were in the lead 2-1, but the game was still up for grabs.

The 5th Inning began well for the Cubs as the first two batters were retired, but then the Phillies Jon Hammer hit a double, and then Elijah Joffe hit another double, allowing Jon Hammer to score.  After that, the Phillies scored another run due to an error making the score 4-1, Phillies.  The Cubs scored two runs as well in the bottom of the 5th Inning to make the score 4-3.

The Phillies were held scoreless in the top of the 6th Inning.  In the bottom of the 6th Inning, the first batter grounded out to the Second Baseman.  Then, Andrew Hass hit a single.  Andrew then stole 2nd Base and then moved to 3rd Base following a passed ball.  He then scored off of an RBI single hit by Mathew Gluck.  That single tied the game, and the pressure was on as the game went into extra innings.

The Phillies failed to score in the top of the 7th Inning.  In the bottom of the 7th Inning, Alex Ring reached First Base following a Phillies error, and went to 2nd Base on an overthrow.  Alex Ring then advanced to Third Base on a ground ball out.  Finally Cole Cleary hit a ground ball to the First Baseman, but Alex beat the throw home and avoided the tag by the Catcher.  The final score was 5-4 Cubs.

The Great Save

The Cubs had a great comeback in the end of the game, and it was partly because of Mathew Gluck’s great pitching.  Mathew had been pitching from when the Phillies were leading, until the end of the game.  Therefore, he got a save.  Here is how he felt about it: “I really wanted to help the team win, and to beat these guys.  We hadn’t beaten these guys before, and they’re in 1st place, so it was a good game.”  Alright, that’s it for this thrilling game.  Tune in next week on the Newton Patch blog.
