Newton Little League: Cubs Claw Their Way to Victory

The Newton Central Cubs battled out against the the Newton North Yankees. Read more about it from this week's young sports writer, Jaden, Farquhar.

During the spring little league season we are posting articles written by young Newton sports writers. This week's story featuring the Newton Central Cubs versus the Newton North Yankees was written by Jaden Farquhar, grade 5 at Peirce school

The Cubs defeated the Yankees in an amazing game, 11-6.  Both teams made some outstanding plays and performed their best.  The Yankees started off strong, and David McCabe got on base after an early error by the Cubs.  He then scored their first run.  Although they had been off to a rough start, the Cubs pulled it together in the bottom of the 1st inning.  Alex Ring hit a single, and then advanced to 3rd base.  He then scored on a groundout to 1st base.  This tied the game.

In the second inning, Ben Kaczmarek singled, and stole 2nd base. Yet, he was unable to score.  Zach Bianchi hit a hard line drive straight at the Cubs’ pitcher Andrew Hass, yet he sprung into action and caught the ball as quick as the wink of an eye.  Next the Cubs scored three runs on singles by Lucas Hanenburg, John Shore and Daniel Belkind.  The Yankees chance of winning seemed to have been expunged until…………

THE YANKEE RALLY

The rally started with a double, hit by Elias Simpson in the top of the third inning.  Next, David McCabe also got a double off of a line drive to center field.  He advanced Elias Simpson to 3rd base.  After that, Nick Busa hit a big one to the outfield, and drove in two runs with a double.

“The rally really motivated me to keep trying hard and hitting well.” Nick Busa said following the game.  Then Jackson Connerney drove in Nick with a double.  Finally, Jack Goldsmith got a triple and drove in a run.  This was the last of the rally, but it put the Yankees ahead by 1 run.  “I thought it was very exciting, and the pitchers threw the ball so fast, it was riveting.”  This is what a spectator commented after the game.

THE CUBS REDEMPTION

In the bottom of the third inning, the Cubs reclaimed the lead with a majestic 2 run homer hit by Mathew Gluck.  Yet in the top of the 5th inning, the Yankees took advantage of a leadoff error and scored the tying run to make the score 6-6.  It had seemed like an even ballgame until the bottom of the 5th inning.  The Cubs, unfazed by the Yankees tying the score in the top of the inning, reclaimed the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning.  Reese Farquhar started the rally by hitting a single into right center field.  The Cubs added a few walks and hits from Mathew Gluck, Lucas Hanenberger and Sam Kingsley to score 5 runs.  The final score was the Cubs 11 and the Yankees 6.

AN AMBIDEXTROUS PITCHER

Yankees pitcher Jack Goldsmith pitched for the majority of the game.  Though he was throwing with his left hand, he is actually ambidextrous.  He pitches right-handed for his travel team, and left-handed for the Yankees.  This is how he described the game: “Everybody was hitting, we were going through the lineup, and it was just really fun and exciting.” All and all he is an excellent pitcher, and the Yankees are lucky to have Jack Goldsmith on their roster.
