The Phillies vs. Cubs - The Game Within a Game

I hope you enjoyed this article. Check the Newton Patch blog weekly to catch up on the Newton Little League's latest games and events.

During the spring little league season we are posting articles written by young Newton sports writers. This week's story featuring the Newton Central Cubs versus the Newton Central Phillies was written by Jaden Farquhar, grade 5 at Peirce school

In the top of the 1st Inning, the Phillies started off fairly well with a walk by Gabe Peckler.  He then advanced to 2nd Base after Elijah Joffe reached base on an error.  Following two strikeouts, the Phillies attempted to steal 3rd base, but the runner was tagged out by the Cubs’ 3rd Baseman, Dan Belkind.  In the bottom of the 1st Inning, the Cubs struck first.  John Shore walked and later scored on a thundering line drive by Matthew Gluck.  The Cubs took the lead 1-0.

In the top of the 2nd Inning the Phillies tied the score after getting runners on 1st and 3rd, by executing a delayed steal allowing Saul Johnson-Green to score from 3rd Base.

Next, in the top of the 3rd Inning, Gabe Peckler, Elijah Joffe and John Hammer all doubled to score 2 runs.  The Phillies took the lead 3-1.  In the bottom of the 3rd Inning, following a few walks, the Cubs’ Cole Cleary scored on a wild pitch making the score 3-2.

In the 5th Inning the Phillies tacked on an additional two runs making the score 5-2.  In the bottom of the 5th the Cubs scratched home another run making the score 5-3.  The Phillies added an additional run in the top of the 6th Inning.  Down 6-3, in the bottom of the 6th Inning the Cubs had two walks and a single, but didn’t score.  The Phillies won 6-3.

Friends and Foes.

Gabe Peckler and John Hammer of the Phillies, and Reese Farquhar of the Cubs are all friends and foes in baseball.  Although they were rivals this game, they all play for the Newton Minutemen 12U AAU baseball team.  They were intensely focused on each other during the game. When interviewed following the game, Gabe Peckler stated, “I just really wanted to strike Reese out.”  Reese Farquhar stated in response, “I was confident that I could hit off of him because I knew his pitching style.”  Ultimately, the game within the game was won by Phillies’ players Gabe Peckler and John Hammer.

Stay tuned for my next article as the Central Cubs travel to Lyons Field in West Newton to battle the West Cubs.
