Giants Hold Off Cubs in Thriller

During the spring little league season we are posting articles written by young Newton sports writers. This story was written by Owen Perry at Cabot school.

As Bret Miller took the mound it was a closer game for the Giants than usual. It was one of the better games for the Cubs. Bret Miller was great on the mound He let a couple of hits go by but he threw mostly strikes and allowed no walks. But the Cubs got on the board first with a home run by Max Kreppin to take a 1-0 lead at the end of the 1st inning. But the Giants didn’t let that lead last for long.  They kept getting hits. You hear the sound of their bats as they got hit after hit including a home run by Kenny Shechter with Declan Gulley scoring. At the end of the 2nd inning the giants had a 2-1 lead.

Both teams were hitting very well with not a lot of strikes for either team. The Cubs pitching was not optimal, so the 3rd inning, they brought in Jacob Moreau to pitch. Their hitting was phenomenal, with Max Kreppin hitting another home run - a two run homer with Jake Forbes scoring. The Cubs had a 3-2 lead at the end of 4 innings. Despite the Cubs having a 2-5 record up against the Giants with a 7-1 record (best in the league) this game looked like the championship the way both two teams played.

In the fifth inning the Giants had some good steals as Kenny Shechter stole 2nd base and Jeremiah Poole stole 2nd base flipping over Cubs 2nd baseman Charlie Johnson. Also the Cubs had some good plays including Will Mehra’s diving catch in the outfield to end the 5thwith a tie game at 3-3. In the 6th inning the Cubs changed their pitcher from Jacob Moreau to Cole Cleary who changed up a little bit throwing more strikes and very few balls. But the Giants hitting was still great. Jeremiah Poole hit an inside the park two run home run to secure a 5-3 lead. The Cubs had one last chance in the top of 6th with Jake Forbes up to bat with 3 balls and one strike. Forbes connected but hit a pop up to left field that was caught by Josh Schoenberg to end the game with the Giants winning 5-3 in a competitive game.

After the game I got a chance to speak with Giants coach Andrew Miller. He said “It was the closest game we have played this year. It was also the best game this year for us and the Cubs.” He also said “Our pitching was great. We didn’t throw a single walk the whole game.  Our Jeremiah Poole had a great steal at 2nd base and Max Kreppin got some good hits for the Cubs.” It was a great game for both the Cubs and Giants in a real thriller.
