Latest on Hess Gas: Spokesman Says 'Absolutely No Plans to Close Any of Our Stores'

But unclear exactly what is happening as Hess gas stations are part of turmoil in the larger Hess Corporation.

Updated 2:14 p.m.

Hess spokesman Dennis Moynihan said Tuesday that reports of closing Hess stores couldn't be further from the truth.

"We have absolutely no plans to close any of our stores," said Moynihan in a statement.

Reports surfaced yesterday that Hess planned to close its gas stations and focus on “exploration and production." Reuters reported the company would exit the retail gasoline business by 2015.

Hess has one gas station location in Newton at 2370 Commonwealth Ave. in Auburndale.

"We want all of our guests to know it's business as usual at all of our retail stores," he added. "Our commitment to competitive prices and customer services – it will not change. The brand is strong, and it will live long into the future."

But in the background, the disposition of the retail end of Hess's business — the iconic green-and-white gas stations — is not so clear.

The New York Times reports that the efforts to appease a major shareholder, hedge fund Elliott Investment,  haven't seemed to do much good.

Bottom line: stay tuned for the latest on the future of our Hess gas stations.
