Macy's in Chestnut Hill to Close

A final clearance sale will begin Sunday.

A fixture in department store retail will soon shut its doors at the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center.

Macy's announced today in a press release it plans to close its Chestnut Hill location following a 10-week clearance sale starting this Sunday, Jan. 9.

The approximate 140 associates were notified of the closing today and the lease has been sold to the owner of the mall, the press release said.

According to the press release, the closing of the 130,000 square-foot Chestnut Hill location is part of a process to "prune underperforming locations while also opening new (locations) to fill gaps in local markets."

This procedure will allow the company to keep a healthy stock of stores as shopping trends come and go, the release said.

Macy's appeared in the shopping center after being converted from a Bloomingdale's in 2007. Once the Chestnut Hill location closes its doors, Greater Boston will be down to 15 Macy's stores total, officials said, and 806 worldwide.
