New Sports Club/LA, City Sports to Open Next Week in Newton

Two years after Chestnut Hill said goodbye to Macy's, new retail is opening up at the former department store site.

Both Sports Club/LA and City Sports are slated to open next week in the The Street's new, 115,000-square-foot building at 55 Boylston St. (Route 9) in Chestnut Hill.

Sports Club/LA will open on Monday, March 11, according to the fitness club's website. The website lists the club hours as Monday-Friday, 5:30 a.m. - 10 a.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

The "jewel box"-concept sports club will feature a number of "technologically-advanced" fitness programs and high-end amenities including a functional training studio, group fitness and a full-experience cycling studio complete with high definition video that allows riders to visualize outdoor bike trails.

City Sports, which is relocating from its former space a few doors down, plans to open its new, 9,200-square-foot store on Saturday, March 16, according to a press release issued Tuesday. 

The new City Sports will feature expanded departments for women’s apparel, youth and team sports as well as an indoor track and treadmill to test out footwear, the press release said. 

City Sports will host a grand opening celebration on March 16 starting at 10 a.m., complete with giveaways and raffles.

Sports Club/LA and City Sports are two of many tenants to soon open in the new, 115,000-square-foot building that was constructed on the former Macy's site. Pinkberry, Bernard's, , lululemon, Polarn O. Pyret and a Showcase Super Lux theatre will also open in the new building.

In addition, site owners WS Development have recently torn down the Century Bank/City Sports building next to Legal Sea Foods and in its place, plan to construct a new, three-story mixed-use building with retail, office and possibly restaurant space.

WS Development is currently working on a multi-phase rebuilding and renovation of the former Chestnut Hill Shopping Center, which includes the two new buildings as well as some pedestrian improvements and landscaping additions.
