VIDEO: Newton Restaurants, Retailers Honored with Business Excellence Awards

Awards were handed out to local businesses and citizens for their work in improving the vitality of Newton's villages and business community.

The city of Newton and the Newton Economic Development Commission (EDC) honored several local restaurants, retailers and community members Thursday night for their involvement in the growth and vitality of Newton's business community.

"I want to…acknowledge how important your business is here in Newton,” said Mayor Setti Warren. “Commerce is so important to the long-term success of Newton.”

EDC Chair Christopher Steele handed out 11 awards recognizing nine local businesses, a local arts organization as well as a "citizen champion."

In addition to the awards, the EDC also honored former member F. Gerard Adams, who passed away last year, with an award established in Adams' name.

"In honor of this very special EDC friend and gentleman, the EDC is establishing the F. Gerard Adams Business Award, which will be given to a Newton employee whose outstanding service is instrumental to the advancement of Newton's business community or to an educational institution whose professional or academic efforts have improved or expanded the economic development and business opportunities in Newton," Steele said.
