Visions for Vacancies: Newton Highlands Bank of America

Although it is not vacant yet, the Newton Highlands Bank of America will be closing in August. What would you like to see in its place?

Welcome to Visions for Vacancies, a Patch feature and a place where you can weigh in with your ideas about what kind of businesses you’d like to see occupying empty storefronts around Newton.

Each week, we’ll highlight a vacant building, storefront or structure around the city. Then, we’ll leave it you, the Newton community, to sound off on what you’d like to see there.

This week we’re at 1160 Walnut St., the current branch.

Although this building is not closed yet, a "for sale" sign has popped up in front of the property. According to Bank of America Spokesman T.J. Crawford, the branch is set to close on August 17, 2012.

The Newton Highlands branch customers were notified of the closing earlier this month, Crawford said, and were advised to use other nearby Bank of America locations on Needham Street and in Newton Centre.

Crawford explained that the property is currently up for bid through the website bankingcentersforsale.com. This could mean that the location will be turned back into a bank, but, if you had your way, what would be your vision for this vacancy?

Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

It's far fetched, but even a very simple fast food restaurant would do. I would *love* to see MBTA bus friendly benches/cover like how it is across the street, as the people waiting to go inbound either has to stand around the sidewalk or sit at the bank's entrance on the patio in the shade.

Fast food sure is hard to find around here!

While a fast food restaurant is a decent choice, there is a Mickey D just over on Needham St. And a fast food restaurant m=needs parking., For that matter ALL of the Highlands does. In all probability, it will be another bank. The costs involved for rental, renovations, etc will be very large, indeed. Ideally, I would like to see a reasonably priced restaurant go in. But there already are a few in the area, Especially O'Hara's. Good food at decent prices. Personally, I would like to see a Housewares store along the lines of a small Lechmere Sales. I have the contacts, I have the knowledge, I have not the funds! But, if anyone is interested, let's talk.
