Dr. Anna Berik of Newton Dental Associates Debunks Myths about Teeth Whitening

A flawless smile not only makes for a great first impression, but it also can say a lot about your health, wellness and personal care. For decades, teeth whitening has been a leading cosmetic trend and has become highly mainstream.  With so many whitening products on the market and procedures offered by the dentist, it can be hard to determine the best and safest way to whiten your teeth. Dr. Anna Berik of Newton Dental Associates has debunked some of the most common myths and has answered some of the most frequently asked questions, making your decision process and teeth whiting experience a lot more clear!

1.      Dentists never use pens or strips when performing teeth whitening treatments.

2.      Whitening does not damage enamel, nerves or existing dental work.

3.      The duration of the whitening process depends on both the system you use and the desired result. Generally, it takes one hour in an office or one month of take home trays.

4.      Only a dental professional can get your teeth to their whitest.

5.      All whitening systems are not the same. An experienced professional with options can best guide patients in selecting a treatment plan that is best for him/her.

6.      Teeth that began as different shades may also be different shades after whitening. Patients with uneven coloration are encouraged to see a cosmetic dentist for an individualized treatment plan.

7.      Professionally whitening in a dental office does permanently change the color of one’s teeth. In order to maintain that brightest shade, especially with habits that stain teeth (coffee, tea, red wine, curry, smoking, etc.), simple touch-up maintenance allows for a white smile to last a lifetime.

8.      Professional tooth whitening has been around for over 75 years and has become mainstream and cosmetic in use.

9.      Laser treatment and the use of UV spectrum lights are two different types of procedures. Most in office whitening uses specialized UV spectrum lights.

10.  Whitening does change the color of teeth. Crowns, veneers and fillings will not change color.
