Are you Fighting with your Scale?

For years I would set the tone of my day based on the number flashing at me in the morning, and no I’m not talking about my alarm clock. My mornings would start with a trip straight to my scale. I would hold my breath as I stepped on; sometimes even say a prayer that my weight would be down.

If I were anywhere out of my “goal weight”, my day would be set off on a negative tone. I’d try so very hard to eat as little as possible, until I couldn’t take it any longer and fell straight into the trap of whatever food was closest to me. On the flip side, if my weight were down I’d be walking on air all day long. Nothing could stop me. I may have been starving but I thought I was indestructible.

Let’s face it; the scale tormented me for years. When I decided I no longer wanted to eat like a crazy person, I began to gain some weight on my unhealthy body. I did not handle it well. It was at this point that I began to wean myself off the scale. It wasn’t easy but I started out by weighing myself every other day, then once a week, then once a month.

I had already convinced myself it would be horrible, but I’ll be honest, it was kind of great to not have the fear of the scale looming in my head on a regular basis. It was exciting to get up and not weigh myself daily, and I suddenly started to dread the days I actually did.

Slowly but surely I stopped weighing myself altogether. I even went so far as to have my doctor weigh me backwards on the scale. Maybe ignorance is bliss but I refuse to let a number determine my self worth, my attitude, or even my life. Tweet it! I would much rather base my weight on things like how I feel in my body, my energy levels, and how my clothes fit than a number that can fluctuate on the hour.

So you tell me, how much worth do you hold on your scale? Why do you keep it around or why did you ditch it?
