Five Things You Need to Know This Week: Nov. 5-11

Committee meetings, election day and the dedication of the Newton Sept. 11 Memorial.

 

1. School Committee meeting.

The Newton School Committee will meet Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Education Center.

According to the agenda listed on the district's website, the meeting will include a discussion of the programming at the new Angier Elementary School as well as an update on recruitment and diversity.

2. Board of Aldermen meet.

The Newton Board of Aldermen will meet Monday, Nov. 5 at 7:45 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chamber at Newton City Hall.

The board will consider a number of items Monday night, including special permits related to a proposed retail structure on Needham Street as well as items related to the design of the Carr School (Newton Cultural Center).

3. Election Day.

The state and presidential election will be held this Tuesday, Nov. 6. In addition to voting for the country's next president, Newton voters will also face decisions for U.S. Senate (Scott Brown vs. Elizabeth Warren), the Fourth Congressional District (Joe Kennedy III vs. Sean Bielat), Governor's Council District Three (Marilyn Pettito Devaney vs. Tom Sheff) and the Middlesex County Sheriff (Peter Koutoujian vs. Ernesto Petrone). 

Newton voters in the 11th Middlesex District will face a decision in that state representative race (Kay Khan vs. Greer Tan Swiston) and Newton voters in the 10th Middlesex District will also have a decision to make (John Lawn vs. Francis Stanton).

4. Plastic bags and the Upper Falls Greenway.

The Newton Board of Aldermen's Programs & Services, Public Safety & Transportation and Public Facilities committees will all meet Wednesday, Nov. 7 in Newton City Hall. 

The Public Facilities Committee will meet at 7 p.m. in room 209 and will consider an item that authorizes the city to enter into a 99-year lease with the MBTA for roughly one mile of land parallel to Needham Street. This land would be turned into a recreational trail, otherwise known as the Upper Falls Greenway.

Also on Wednesday night, the Programs & Services Committee will take public comment on an item proposing an ordinance that would add a fee to single-use plastic and paper bags that are not at least 40 percent post-consumer recycled material. That meeting will be held at 7:45 p.m. in room 222 at City Hall.

 

5. Newton Sept. 11 Memorial Dedication.

Just two months after breaking ground, construction at the Newton Sept. 11 Memorial has finally finished and the Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee will hold a dedication ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 10. 

The dedication ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the memorial site located in front of Newton Fire Headquarters on Centre Street.
