Five Things You Need to Know Today: April 7

A family concert, a food drive and a flower/garden show.

1. Family Discovery Series Concert. The New Philharmonia Orchestra will present another Family Discovery Series concert this afternoon at 3 p.m. . The concert will run roughly one hour and will include the New Phil's acclaimed New Phil Instrument Petting Zoo at the end of the show. The concert will be held at the First Baptist Church in Newton. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $10 for students.

2. Newton Open Studios. The annual Newton Spring Open Studios will continue today at 60 "pop-up" art exhibits throughout the city. Roughly 180 Newton artists will be on display at these exhibits, which will be open from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Check out this story for more information and links to exhibit locations.

3. "Pasta for Pasta" food drive. Donate a box of pasta to the local Newton Panera today to benefit the Greater Boston Food Bank. In exchange, the first 25 people to donate today will receive a Mystery Panera Bread Gift Card (ranging in value from $2 - $50) to try one of Panera's new pasta dishes. Donations will be accepted from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. today.

4. Treat is OPEN. The new Treat Cupcake Bar location at The Street in Chestnut Hill is now open! Treat is open Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Treat is located at 49 Boylston St. (next to Pinkberry and behind Shake Shack) and can be reached at 617-277-7772.

5. "Step into Spring" flower and garden show. The Mall at Chestnut Hill is hosting its annual "Step into Spring" flower and garden show now through May 12. Award winning landscape artists, horticulturists, master gardeners and floral designers will share examples of gardens, stone sculptures, unique garden settings and floral arrangements in common areas throughout the mall. The mall is open Sundays noon - 6 p.m.
