Five Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 1

Newton North basketball, free playtime and discounts for Wear Red Day.

1. Wear Red Day. According to a Facebook post from The Newton Partnershipis sponsoring Wear Red Day for teens today. Teens wearing red to Johnny’s Luncheonette, Lee’s Burgers, Subway, J.P. Licks, Newtonville Pizza, Yo Fresh, George Howell Coffee, or b.good will receive a discount on a healthy menu item. It's also Wear Red Day across the country as the American Heart Association raises awareness for women's heart health.

2. Constituent hours with Ald. Linsky. Ward 2 Alderman Stephen Linsky will hold constituent office hours at the Newton Senior Center today from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

3. Go Tigers! The Newton North boys' varsity basketball team will face Weymouth High School in a home match tonight at 6:30 p.m. The girls will travel to Weymouth for an away game, which also starts at 6:30 p.m.

4. Free Playtime. The Freedman Center at MSPP will host a free playtime today for children up to age 4 and their parents/caregivers. Stop by, make some new friends and catch up with old playmates. The playtime will run from 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Space is limited and admittance will be on a first come, first served basis. 

5. Election Commission. The Newton Election Commission will meet this afternoon at 3 p.m. in room 222 at Newton City Hall to discuss plans for a special election to fill Alderman Carleton Merrill's seat. In addition, the committee will discuss informational mailings for the special override election on March 12.
