Five Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 22

A big hockey game, a cultural affairs press conference and a service to remember Franco Garcia.

1. Remembering Franco. One year ago today, West Newton resident and Boston College senior Franco Garcia left a Cleveland Circle bar and tragically drowned in the Chestnut Hill reservoir. Later today, family and friends will gather at St. Mary's Parish in Waltham (133 School St.) for a memorial service and library dedication. The service starts at 6:30 p.m. with Rosary followed by Catholic Mass at 7 p.m. and the library dedication at 8 p.m.

2. Let's go, Lions! The Newton South boys' ice hockey team is one point away from its first playoff bid in 17 years. The Lions will face Lowell this afternoon at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell and must tie or win to make it to the playoffs. If you can, head to Lowell to cheer on the Lions! Game time is 4 p.m.

3. Got talent? There are just a couple of days left to register for Newton Has Talent. The event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Newton, is taking talent submissions until Feb. 24. Cash prizes available to winners!

4. CPR/AED course postponed. The city's free community CPR/AED training course originally scheduled for this Sunday has been postponed due to the expected snowstorm. A rescheduled date is TBD.

5. Launching heritage festivals. Mayor Setti Warren will join members of his cultural affairs staff today to kick off a series of "heritage festivals" to be held in the city over the next two months. The Newton Heritage Festivals include a series of events around French, Chinese, Latin American and Russian cultures. A press conference will be held this afternoon at Cafe St. Petersburg in Newton Centre to launch the program. Stay tuned for coverage and more information!
