Five Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 26

Playoffs continue, Bike/Pedestrian Task Force meeting and NewtonSERVES project registration is open.

1. NewtonSERVES project registration. NewtonSERVES is now accepting project registrations for the city-wide day of service, which will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2013. Newton non-profits, Newton city departments, individuals and groups of citizens interested in accomplishing specific tasks with the help of volunteers from the community are encouraged to set up a project. Projects can be registered online.

2. Playoff update. An update from last night's games: the Newton North girls' ice hockey team defeated Shrewsbury 3-1 in a preliminary round game for the Div. 1 playoffs. They will face St. Mary's of Lynn in Lynn (date/time TBA) for a first round match. In addition, the Newton South girls' basketball team defeated Taunton last night 60-54 and will face Newton North in a first round game on Wednesday at Newton North. Meanwhile, the No. 17 Newton South boys' basketball team will face No. 16 West Roxbury tonight in a South Div. 1 preliminary round match. The game will take place in West Roxbury and starts at 7 p.m. 

3. Bicycle/pedestrian task force. The Newton Bicycle/Pedestrian Task Force will meet tonight at 7:45 p.m. in the City Hall cafeteria (lower level). The agenda for tonight's meeting is available online

4. Eva Thompson retiring. During last night's School Committee meeting, Superintendent David Fleishman announced that Oak Hill Middle School Principal Eva Thompson will be retiring at the end of this school year. Thompson has been in Newton for 37 years. 

5. Indoor farmers' market. The Newton Indoor Farmers' Market will be open today from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hyde Community Center.
