Five Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 18

Basketball, improv and an art reception.

1. Exhibit opening reception. The New Art Center will host an opening reception tonight for the "Upsodown" and "In Praise of Folly" exhibits. Upsodown "brings together the work of ten visual artists from the South, West and East Coasts to explore the transformative power of carnival." In Praise of Folly will feature the work of Carol Blackwell and Gail Hansen. The reception starts at 6 p.m.

2. In case you missed it. The Newton Police Dept. is investigating an attempted break-in that occurred on Temple Street yesterday, near Peirce Elementary School. Anyone with any info is encouraged to contact Newton Police at 617-796-2100 or the anonymous Tips Line at 617-796-2121.

3. WAI Funny Improv. Check out tonight's "WAI Funny Improv" show at Newton South High School at 7:30 p.m. The show will benefit WaterAid International.

4. Runners needed. The American Liver Foundation's Boston Marathon team is still looking for runners. Check out this announcement for more info.

5. Go Tigers! The Newton North boys' varsity basketball team will face Natick High School in a home match tonight at 6:30 p.m.
