Five Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 21

A benefit concert, CSA enrollment and the city's MLK Day celebration.

1. MLK Day celebration. The city of Newton will hold a community gathering this morning to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. The event will be held at Temple Beth Avodah and starts at 9:30 a.m. 

2. Schools, city offices closed. City offices, post offices, schools, the Newton Free Library and Newton Senior Center will be closed today for the MLK Day holiday. Trash/recycling pick-up will also be delayed one day this week/ 

3. Josh and the Jamtones Concert. Temple Shalom Nursery School will host Josh and the Jamtones for a benefit concert this morning at 10:30 a.m. The concert will benefit the school's magic garden. Tickets are $20 per family and there will be a drawing for prizes.

4. Newton Community Farm CSA enrollment. Enrollment for the Newton Community Farm CSA starts today for 2012 CSA members looking to re-enroll. From Jan. 21 - Feb. 3, the CSA is open to 2012 members, then Newton residents can enroll from Feb. 4 - Feb. 24. If shares are still available as of Feb. 26, they will be open to the general public. 

5. Winter storm watch. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch beginning Monday afternoon. The heaviest snow will be along the coast of Massachusetts, where 4 to 8 inches of snow could fall, but the storm watch includes the cities of Boston and Cambridge. Further inland, snowfall is expected to between 1 to 3 inches, according to the forecast by WHDH Channel 7.
