2. Playoff update. Unfortunately, two Newton basketball teams ended their playoff runs last night after close losses. The No. 2 Newton North boys fell to No. 6 North Quincy 51-47 in the South Div. 1 semifinals. The Tigers finish the season 20-4. Meanwhile, the No. 17 Newton South girls lost to No. 4 Franklin in a very close 54-53 South Div. 1 semifinal match. The Lions finish the season at 13-11.

3. Sheriff Koutoujian to meet with seniors. Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian will meet with seniors in Newton today at two separate events. Koutoujian will first stop by the Leventhal-Sidman JCC at 10 a.m. to talk about scam prevention. Then, Koutoujian will stop by the Newton Senior Center at 1 p.m. to talk about his role as sheriff and the programs his office provides.

4. MassDOT/Add-a-Lane meeting. The MassDOT Add-a-Lane project will be the topic of discussion at tonight's Public Safety and Transportation Committee meeting. Representatives from the Mass. Dept. of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will be on hand to talk about traffic concerns related to Add-a-Lane and Quinobequin Road. The meeting will be held at 7:45 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chamber at City Hall.

5. Storm tonight? A winter storm watch is in effect for the Newton area from Thursday morning through Friday morning as a storm passes just south of New England tonight. A rain/snow mix will likely hit the area, but snowfall totals are uncertain at this time. Check out the National Weather Service forecast for more information.
