Five Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 1

An author event, a School Committee meeting and a place to drop off that extra candy.

1. Power still out? As of late Wednesday night, less than 850 Newton NSTAR customers were without power -- a dramatic drop from what it was a day ago. This is just 2 percent of the total NSTAR customers in the city. NSTAR is estimating that full power will be restored by Thursday night. Patch will have more updates for you later today.

2. Special School Committee meeting. The Newton School Committee will hold a special meeting this morning at 8 a.m. in the Education Center. The committee will discuss the latest student enrollment numbers as well as updates on facilities projects at Day Middle School and Angier Elementary.

3. Have any extra candy? This Halloween, trick-or-treaters are encouraged to bring their extra candy to Dr. David Oliver at Move Well Chiropractic and he will send the candy to troops overseas. Candy will be collected at Move Well Chiropractic on November 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Nov 2 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The candy must be unopened. It will then be shipped to Operation Shoebox which will send it to the troops overseas. Oliver did a similar candy collection last year.
