Five Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 12

City offices and schools are closed, but there will be Veterans Day ceremonies and a dance-a-thon to check out.

1. Veterans Day observed. Newton City Hall, the Newton Public Schools, the Newton Free Library and the Newton Senior Center will all be closed today along with post offices and many banks. Check out this list to see what else is open and closed. 

2. Dance-a-Thon. The Dreamfar High School Marathon team will hold it's first annual Dance-A-Thon to raise awareness and funds for the Dreamfar program. The a community event will have dancing all day long, with area dance schools teaching new dances. There will also be local bands performing, arts and crafts, food all day and a silent auction in the evening. The event kicks off at 8 a.m. and will last all day. 3. Veterans Day ceremonies at BC. Boston College will host its 12th annual Veterans Day Remembrance Mass and Ceremony today at 9:30 a.m. The events will start with a Mass at St. Ignatius Church at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Remembrance Roll Call Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial (tent on Burns Library Lawn) at 11 a.m. A shuttle bus will take people from St. Ignatius Church to the Veterans Memorial after the Mass.

4. Trash delayed. With the Veterans Day holiday, trash and recycling pickup in Newton this week will be delayed by one day. 

5. Reminder. A flu vaccine clinic for Newton residents will be held this Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 440. The flu vaccine clinic is available for those age 6 months and older. Both the flu vaccine injection and nasal spray vaccine will be available. The form needed for the clinic is available online.
