Five Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 14

A family flu clinic, a blood drive and an override discussion.

1. Congrats, Tigers! The Newton North girls' volleyball team is moving on to the state Div. 1 finals! The Tigers, who won the Central/East Div. 1 championship last weekend, defeated North Div. 1 champion Andover 3-0 last night. The Tigers will now face either Lincoln-Sudbury (Central/West champions) or Barnstable (South champions) on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Algonquin Regional High School. Game time is 6 p.m.

2. Family flu clinic. The Newton Health & Human Services Department will host a free family flu clinic today from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 440. The clinic is open to all Newton residents age 6 months and older. There is no charge to receive the vaccine, but residents should bring their health insurance and Medicare cards if they have them. Flu shots available for children and adults; nasal spray flu vaccine available for children. Call the City of Newton Health and Human Services Department flu hotline at 617-796-1426 for more information.

3. Blood drive. The Newton Free Library will host a blood drive today from 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

4. Newton Inspires. The Newton Schools Foundation will present "Newton Inspires: An Evening of Ideas and Community" tonight from 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at Newton South High School. The evening includes a list of speakers from many fields and interest areas who will talk on topics that inspire them, including business, education, science and medicine, journalism, the environment, sports, literature, arts and entertainment. To register and for more information visit the NSF website.

5. CIP public hearing and override discussion. The Newton Board of Aldermen will meet in a Committee of the Whole tonight to hold a public hearing on the mayor's fiscal 2014-fiscal 2018 Capital Improvement Plan. The aldermen will also hold a discussion on the mayor's proposed override package. The meeting starts at 7:45 p.m. and will be held in the Aldermanic Chamber at City Hall.
