Five Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 29

A Community Preservation Committee event, a forum about transgender rights in Newton and continued discussion on the override proposal.

1. Understanding to Enactment: Applying the Transgender Equal Rights Law in Newton. The Newton Human Rights Commission will host an educational forum tonight that aims to inform local residents and business owners about the transgender community. "Understanding to Enactment: Applying the Transgender Equal Rights Law in Newton," will take place at the Newton Senior Center from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

2. Community Preservation Committee event. After a year-long birthday celebration for the Community Preservation Act in Newton, the Community Preservation Committee will hold an event tonight to wrap-up the year's news as well as discuss the new funding guidelines for the Community Preservation Act. The event will be held at 7 p.m. in the Druker Auditorium at the Newton Free Library.  

3. Committee of the Whole meeting. The Board of Aldermen will meet tonight in a Committee of the Whole to continue discussion of the mayor's proposed override package. The meeting will be held at 7:45 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chamber at City Hall.

4. Historic Newton Book Club. The book club will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. to discuss H.W. Brands' American Colossus. The free meetings are held at the Jackson Homestead and new members are always welcome. 

5. Women's travel writing event. Newtonville Books will host its Best Women's Travel Writing Event tonight at 7 p.m. The evening will feature contributors Marcia DeSanctis, Ann Hood, Abbie Kozolchyk and Carol Reichert.
