Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 17

An adult flu clinic, an art reception and the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

1. Adult flu clinic. The city of Newton will host an adult flu clinic today at the Newton Senior Center from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

2. Teen art reception. The Newton Free Library will hold a reception this afternoon at 4 p.m. for the latest teen art exhibit, Prints and Masks from Newton North High School. The Magic Flutes, a local student flute choir, will perform at the reception, which is free and open to the public. The art will be on display now through spring 2013. 

3. Open houses. Both the Jackson School and Mount Alvernia Academy will hold open houses today from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.

4. Subcommittee meetings. The Board of Aldermen's Public Facilities, Public Safety & Transportation and Programs & Services Committees will all meet tonight at Newton City Hall in rooms 209, 202 and 222, respectively. Public Safety and Programs & Services will meet at 7:45 p.m. and Public Facilities will meet at 7 p.m. One of the items on tonight's Programs & Services Committee agenda includes discussion on the possibility of food trucks in Newton.

5. Voter registration deadline. Today is the last day to register to vote for the state and presidential election on Nov. 6! The Newton Election Department will be open late, until 8 p.m., to accommodate last-minute registrations.
