Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 18

NCP's "Love Letters" opens, the library hosts an author event and the Newton Business Excellence Awards.

1. Newton Business Excellence Awards. The Newton Economic Development Commission will present the Newton Business Excellence Awards tonight in the War Memorial at City Hall. The event begins at 6 p.m.

2. Area council meeting. The Newton Upper Falls Area Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at the Emerson Community Center. 

3. Love Letters. Newton Country Player's "Love Letters" opens tonight at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newton Centre. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for students and seniors. To buy tickets online, go to the Newton Country Players' website. You can also make a reservation by calling 617.244.9538 or emailing ncplayersinfo@gmail.com. To mark the occasion of the opening of the show, NCP is offering patrons the opportunity to save $5 off the cost of admission by bringing a love letter to the performance.

4. Author event. Author Caitrin Lynch will be at the Newton Free Library tonight starting at 7 p.m. to discuss her book Retirement on the Line. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase courtesy of the New England Mobile Book Fair. 

5. Last chance to voice your opinion. The Newton Community Preservation Committee is looking for residents' feedback on guidelines for Community Preservation Act-funded projects. Residents .
