Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 21

1. Town hall meeting with Mayor Warren. Newton Mayor Setti Warren will hold a town hall-style meeting this afternoon at 12:30 p.m. to discuss his recent override proposal. The mayor will be joined by several members of his staff as well as Superintendent David Fleishman. The meeting is open to all Newton residents and will be held at Cabot Elementary. 

2. New crosswalk. The Newton Police Department announced on Friday that a new crosswalk has been added at the intersection of Walnut Street and Austin Street in Newtonville Square. Look out for pedestrians!

3. Public forum on cutting military spending. As part of a series of public forums on cutting military spending, Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons in Space, will give a talk today on the U.S. overseas bases and use of drones. Today's forum starts at 7 p.m. and will be held at the First Unitarian Society in Newton.

4. Scarecrow walk. The Newton Parks & Recreation Department and the Nahanton Nature Center have set up the annual Scarecrow Walk for this weekend at Nahanton Park. Stop by between 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. for scavenger hunts, crafts, apple cider, nature walks and, of course, all the scarecrows. 

5. Free concert. Carla Chrisfield, soprano, and William Merrill, piano, will give a free afternoon concert today at the Newton Free Library. The two will perform works by Franz Liszt, Camille Saint-Saëns, Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius and others. The concert starts at 2 p.m.
